Mondo Guerra of Project Runway

Meet Mondo Guerra. A 5th generation Mexican-American fashion designer who placed 2nd in Season 8 of Project Runway and is among the last eight contestants remaining in Project Runway All Stars Edition this season.
In Season 8, Guerra revealed his HIV Positive Status on an episode by incorporating symbolic HIV symbols into his fabric and design (see below). With courage and conviction, Guerra revealed that he had held this secret for 10 years, and stated that it felt liberating to finally release this secret. Since then Guerra has used his exposure as a platform for social change, becoming one of the nation’s most high-profile Latino HIV activists. His actions have inspired others to care for themselves and to help members of the HIV community.
Update: Guerra appeared at the 15th annual U.S. Conference on AIDS in November. Guerra took part in a round table discussing homophobia and the disease. Guerra is now the spokesperson for Living Positive by Design campaign. The aim is to “convey to people living with the disease to continue to have a positive outlook on life,” Guerra says. “It’s a really simple message, but a really important one that someone living with HIV may forget on a day-to-day basis.”
